Dr. Daniel J. Sullivan, MD, JD, FACEP, was selected to give the James D. Mills, Jr. Memorial Lecture “How Physicians Think: The Cognitive Autopsy” at the 2009 ACEP Scientific Assembly.
Dr. Sullivan's presentation addresses a new concept in case analysis called ‘heuristics’ or the Cognitive Disposition to Respond. This has been the subject of a recent book entitled How Physicians Think. Dr. Sullivan draws upon malpractice case law to demonstrate a new method for analysis of the cause of adverse patient outcomes and medical errors. All emergency practitioners should understand this important new insight into medical decision-making and its impact on patient care.
James D. Mills, Jr., MD, was a founder and 2-term president of ACEP. The selection of the Mills Lecture is based on the importance of the topic to the specialty of emergency medicine – its past, present and future.
